The following is a list of FAQ's from customers over the past few years. If you do not find what you need here, please email sales@tiico.com or call 888 941-3373.
It is very important to plug into your ECU and set your CO%. The default number from VW is 128 in adaptive mode. This number can run higher at elevations above 4000 feet.
Timing: After fan has cycled, (this is very important!!) set basic timing to 10-12 degrees BTDC (6 degrees marked on engine timing cover with small hole). Set the CO to 1% with the oxygen sensor disconnected, reconnect after setting. A fuel injection manual is available in PDF format on the owner’s page. A digital degree advance timing light must used: (Mac Tools # TL 300 or Snap-On # OTC 3375 or equivalent). Remove the over flow tank for better access to the timing marks. Using the 1552 (or equvilent) , go to engine electronics basic setting prompt 04, channel 001, and this will raise the idle to 1450 rpm’s so you can set timing manually. Set timing light; advancing it to 10 –12 degrees BTDC (TIMING DATA IS ONLY ACCURATE WITH THE DIGITAL ADVANCE TIMING LIGHT. THE TIMING INFORMATION RETRIEVED WITH THE 1552 OR EQUIVALENT IS NOT ACCURATE). Loosen the distributor and rotate so notch on crankshaft pulley aligns directly under yellow painted arrow on timing cover looking through license plate cover. Tighten down distributor hold bolt. Re-check timing to make sure it hasn’t moved.Setup: Plug
1552 (or 1552 / 51 emulator) in under rear seat.
Baum Tools (baumtools.com) CS2000 and VDS PRO also work and instructions
are available. A required fuel
injection workshop manual is available to download for free.
Clear codes again and set adaptation to 00128.
Fuel injectors may need to be replaced
Oxygen sensor may need to be replaced
ICU failure possible
Fuel pressure regulator may by faulty. Fuel pressure must be 29 PSI.

The duo sensor mounted in the intake manifold can get covered in oil during break in period. Remove this sensor and clean with electrical contact cleaner of a diluted soap and water solution. This fault code will come up with a diagnostics machine.
A minimum fuel grade of 89 octane should be used in this motor.
Catalytic converter may be plugged.
Oxygen sensor may need to be replaced
Fuel injectors may need replacing
Fuel pressure regulator may by faulty. Fuel pressure must be 29 PSI.
Loosen the engine mounts with the engine turned off to let the engine re-settle in place and re-torque.
Alternator bearing may be shot.
Muffler and/or catalytic converter may need to be replaced or re mounted with no stress on any of the connecting points.
Front transmission mount may need to be replaced.
A small production run or engines, the accessory mounting plate may be touching the block below the water pump housing, just above the power steering bracket. If your engine is affected, there will be a scratch on the a block rib caused by the plate resting on that portion of the block. This was due to a change in manufacturers of the water pump and has since been remedied. Engines affected would have been bought in early 2003. Please call if you have any questions.
NEW: After, and only after the above has been performed. The half moon plates on the rear of the engine carrier bars can be welded to the chassis. Mark where the half moon plate is located on the chassis. Support the engine and lower the engine carrier bars one at a time. Remove the half moon plate from the engine carrier bars and bolt back onto the chassis. Make sure they are properly aligned before welding. Run a bead down each side of the plate. Reattach the engine carrier arms. This is now required in new installations.
1. Clutch kit ("LUK" heavy duty is recommended)
2. 7 mm high pressure fuel line. 3 meters should do.
3. coolant. Standard coolant can be used in the new engine.
4. 5 quarts oil.
